The Waking Giant - Anika

The Waking Giant

People are busily rushing around the park, walking dogs and jogging lightly. An immense Parliament building made a perfect scene for photos, therefore professional photographers were constantly clicking their cameras people were happily going about with their daily lives. I myself, who was going for a peaceful stroll, decide that I would hang around here for some more time, I mean it is such a beautiful day.

An elderly couple observes an abundant group of birds. There were doves and parrots and pigeons galore. Then quite suddenly the petrified feathered creatures burst out of the birch trees with colour, their vibrant feather glistening with fear. ‘What could have frightened them,’ I wonder as I glance lazily at the flocks of birds. After that, the ground begins to tremble and the lush green trees sway vigorously with terror. I am forced to sit down because of the rough shaking. “Oh dear,” I say out loud, my voice sounding all wobbly, “Oh dear indeed.” A young woman gives a sudden high-pitched scream. AAAGGGGHHH!!”

She was right to scream, for at that moment a colossal giant creature raises out from underneath the endless, great green grass blanket. Thisthing looks revolting. It had a moss-covered body, looking like he had some kind of disease. His dull, dark green complexion made him look revolting and a peculiar smell hung around him like flies attracted to fertilizer. What used to be a bustling busy park was now completely empty - not a person in sight. Things are definitely not going well. The stone monster gives an agonised grumble…. “ROAR!!” As he does this, the people flutter away like they were mice and the monster was a hungry cat. I hunt around me for some sort of hiding place until I can escape this doom day and cuddle up into my warm cosy bed. ‘Whats that over there’ I wonder. I advance towards a pine tree nearby, I realize that it is hollow and I decide it could make a perfect place to hide until these unfortunate events pass on somewhere else.

As the monster lumbers in a slow lazy walk, he stretches himself. ‘He must be tired’ I think to myself, ‘well that’s what sleeping for a thousand does to you.’ While I was in the tree I had a lot of time to think. My parents will be so worried. I hope they have not taken it in their mind that they should come and look for me. This giant could do anything, I am pretty sure it could easily eat me up. Oh dear, why does it have to look in my direction, I feel like it has sensed me out already. What is the time, only half past 10? OH NO!! He is coming towards me!! DUCK!!!’ As I was thinking all these thoughts the giant had actually managed to make its way through the small squishy trees.

I held my breath as it trudges loudly toward my direction. I want to stand up and stretch but what good would that do? No, I had to wait. I begin to count the seconds in my head before I would meet my fate. The scorching sun was shining down on me. Sweat drips down my forehead where hair, that is plastered to my face, shook because of the trembling ground.  I was up to 2 minutes and 29 seconds when the giant did something strange. It knelt down on its knees and held something. It was a red rose I notice from my distant hiding place. He thrust the rose into his right hand and presses it to his heart. ‘Oh my gosh,’ I mutter under my breath. ‘He’s crying!’ A few minutes pass as I glance down as my watch. I notice that it was just me and the giant around. ‘Oh, dear is he still crying?’ I ponder what to do next. An idea flashes into my head. I have to go and help him.

I make my way to the giant. Through the narrow tree path, I go. As I cautiously walk towards the giant, I rethink my idea. I could feel his heavy breathing on me. Honestly, it didn’t smell very good. I could even see his large tears drop to the ground. But as I near the poor giant he looks at me and I froze dead in my path. Throwing my fears out of my mind I pull myself together. For the giant,” I say out loud. For the giant.

With every step I take, the harder the giant looks at me. With every glance I make, the harder he looks at me again!! Finally, I reach the sobbing giant. I lightly pat his arm. He felt rough, like a rigid stone piece. And he is covered fully with moss,’ I say to myself. I didn’t know if he could speak English but I spoke to him anyway. Everything is going to be okay,” I say remembering the words my mother tells me when I am upset. I repeat what I said. Everything is going to be ok. I smile at him. He looked quite shaken actually. But then - but then he smiles at me and slowly picks himself up. I watch him lumber away rethinking what I had just done…. “OH MY!!” I say. “The giant is sinking in the ground!!” The stone creature was actually being engulfed by the dry grass. There was something strange though. ‘He is smiling. I must have done a good deed,’ I think. I stare at him until he had fully gone through the ground. I then skip happily back home to my parents. “Well honey, how was your day,” my mum asks. “My day??” I reply. “My day was just a normal one like any other.
